On 17 May 2019, a locomotive of a passenger train caught fire near Lödöse in the municipality of Lilla Edets in Västra Götaland. The fire is believed to have started in the engine room and was caused by an electrical fault.
Alron was commissioned to assist Probaco Värmland in preventing the spread of corrosion (rust) in the fire-damaged locomotive.
When plastic burns, acids of various kinds can be formed, including salt oxygen gas. The hydrochloric acid gas forms together with the water substance hydrochloric acid which in contact with metal causes this to quickly rust, partly due to acid corrosion and partly to chloride ion catalyzed corrosion, which usually affects poorly surface protected details.

The locomotive was sealed/fogged internally with the product Alrust Fog to quickly protect the surfaces and materials not yet affected by rust. Alrust Fog is a special agent for corrosion protection and passivation of chloride ions after PVC fires. The agent forms a thin film on the treated surfaces and prevents water from mixing with chloride ions that would otherwise lead to corrosion.
The treatment resulted in the spread of the rust attack being prevented and thus the extent of damage and economic proportions could be significantly reduced.
